Textual, Textile: Elizabeth Arzani, Karey Kessler, Alyson Provax, Tara Tamaribuchi
JULY 25-28, BOOTH C 10
The Vestibule presents a collaboratively curated exhibition of four Pacific Northwest artists, Elizabeth Arzani, Karey Kessler, Alyson Provax, Tara Tamabuchi. The works each hint at a story or a poem, in ceramic, letterpress, watercolor, or textile.
Elizabeth Arzani marks playful, colorful ceramics with tantalizing textual fragments. Arzani’s practice spans painting, sculpture, and printmaking, through which she crafts narratives filled with curiosity and humor.
Karey Kessler creates map paintings that explore the entangled ways in which our minds, time, and place are deeply interconnected. Through overlaid map imagery and evocative text, Kessler creates mutable poetic landscapes that invite multiple interpretations.
Alyson Provax shows new letterpress works; using this technique to repeat phrases, she challenges the authoritative nature of text, prompting viewers to contemplate the act of reading itself. Her work provokes reflection on how we tie our sense of certainty and self-understanding to language.
Tara Tamaribuchi connects current issues of xenophobia with the history of incarcerated Japanese Americans weaving thousands of camouflage nets for the US Army in World War II. Tamaribuchi weaves strips of kimono fabric onto ric rac to send pride of heritage back in time to her elders and to celebrate the midcentury aesthetics of that generation. As camouflage works as a visual blender, the artist rereads this war technology to be a filter through which we see all people as interconnected.
The artists, along with The Vestibule curator, have invested both financially and creatively, co-curating the booth to present an artist-forward, immersive presentation.
