Time Capsule
Gallery Exhibition February 24 - March 9

Poetry Reading with Molly Schaeffer, March 9
This exhibition centers our 2024 series, Time is the Subject. This title has a double meaning: time is both the ‘subject’ in the sense of the topic, the issue at hand. And time is also the ‘subject’, in the sense of the perceiver, the witness, the human condition.
We held an open call for work on this theme. The open call returned a richness of submissions.: a snapshot of the work by artists in our Pacific Northwest community and of those artists connected to them – a moment in cultural history and in the history of these artists’ practices. We want to keep this moment.
So we thought, why not? Let’s make a time capsule to hold a signifier of each project.
We will exhibit the work in the gallery for 3 weeks. The final weekend, we will celebrate with a poetry reading before sealing the work in the capsule. Four local poets and visual artists —Molly Schaeffer, Liza Birnbaum, Ruth Marie Tomlinson, Shelby Handler — will read from time-inspired projects.
Then, we will store this work in the Vestibule [North] on Lopez Island, the site of our future artist residency. We will reexhibit it in 5,10, 25 years, wherever the gallery then exists.
